Scripture Readings- 1 Corinthians 1:18-24- Matthew 24:27-36
On Thursday of this week the Church will be commemorating the Feast of St. John Chrysostomos or Hovahness Voskeperan Hayrabed, who was one of the greatest Fathers of the Early Church, he also became the Patriarch of Constantinople in the 4th Century. Yes some seventeen centuries have passed since his death however he continues to be known as the greatest defender of the Gospel and teaching of the Church, known for his preaching and moral teachings he became known as Voskeperan or Golden Mouth for his strict adherence to the teachings of the Gospel, his keen intellect and his exemplary life as a Christian and ascetic cleric, he is also known as a great writer and teacher not only during his own time but in our own contemporary times as well. He has truly left us all a great spiritual legacy.
One would wonder that if St. John Chrysostom were alive today how he would react to what is going on in the world around us and how we as Christians have accepted the attacks upon our faith with indifference and apathy all in the name of being politically correct, while being party to the eventual decimation of Christian values and human dignity which is taking a very serious toll on the very fabric of our society.
St. John Chrysostom openly chastised the leaders of his own time for the moral and spiritual depravation that they imposed upon their respective societies, perhaps Chrysostom lived some 17 centuries before us but what he fought and preached against then is very relevant even in our own day. As Christians we need to stand up and be counted!!!!
