Holy Catholic Church of Etchmiadzin

Readings - Proverbs 9:1-6, Hebrews 9:1-10, Gospel- John 10:22-30

Tomorrow being Memorial Day I would like to share a thought about what our faith teaches about those who have departed from this life, as we think about what we can do for our departed loved ones the most important things that comes to mind is that we remember the words of the Holy Gospel which remind us that it is a Holy and wholesome thought to remember those who have gone to eternal life, in essence to pray for them.
When we come to Church to offer a memorial service for a departed love one we should keep in mind that the service of remembering our loved one begins at the start of the Divine Liturgy and not at the end of the Service, the celebrant offers prayers for the souls of our departed several time during the Divine Liturgy especially in his personal prayers and petitions that he himself offers to God.
There has been a great misconception concerning when and where one should arrive at the Service and the answer is simply put that those who request a Hokehankist or Memorial Service for their loved ones should be present for the entire celebration of the Divine Liturgy and not arrive at the end of the Service.  Arriving at the end of the Service to only to attend the Memorial Service not only shows a lack of honor and respect for the departed but moreover it shows that we do not take our faith or our relationship with God very seriously and such an approach to something so spiritually important gives the impression that our faith has become nothing more than a convenience.  Please keep these factors in mind when planning to remember the memory of those who have departed this life.
